Rum
Rum is a classic spirit from the Caribbean, made by fermenting and distilling molasses (a byproduct of sugar production) or, less commonly, the pressed juice of sugarcane.
To help navigate the different types of rum, here are the main categories:
-
White or Blanco/White: This clear, transparent variety is usually either unaged or filtered to remove color after a short barrel aging. It is primarily used in cocktails.
-
Gold or Oro: The golden color is achieved by adding caramel. This type is mostly used in cocktails as well.
-
Dark or Black: This full-bodied, characterful rum gets its color from additional caramel and is typically used in exotic cocktails.
-
Spiced: As the name suggests, this is a gold rum flavored with exotic spices, making it a great base for long drinks.
-
Aged Rum: This category includes rum that is aged in barrels for an extended period, developing sophisticated, elegant flavors and a dark color. These rums are enjoyed in a manner similar to luxury whiskies or cognacs.
